And this song used to be played on immense demand in the ‘Ap ki Farmaish’ programme of AIR Delhi. The song was, ‘Chhip chip kar mat dekhoji bhanwarjee hum ko nazar lag jaae gi’. But the truth of the matter is that the song he sang in the first hit film for which he also wrote some lyrics became a super-hit. Why I have referred to film ‘Man ki jeet’ in particular is because it was through this film that, for the first time I was acquainted with the name of Bharat Vyas, not as a lyricist but as a singer. That was in my childhood.

The movie was banned in 1947-after India became free-on account of an allegedly suggestive rape scene (which would seem absolutely harmless compared to what was depicted in ‘Insaf ka Tarazu’). He wrote a lyric or two too but he became popular because of the duet he sang with Shanta Thakkar. But it was in this film that Bharat Vyas too acquired great fame. W.Z.Ahmed’s wife Neena was the heroine of several Shalimar films including ‘Ek Raat’(starring Prithviraj) and ‘Man ki jeet’ in which hero was Shyam and there were some beautiful songs by Josh Malihabadi as well like ‘Nagri meri kab tak yunhi barbaad rahe gi’. Bharat Vyas subsequently tagged himself with Shalimar Pictures in Pune whose owner W.Z.Ahmed was maternal uncle of Mr Justice Amar Saran(retired). And would you believe it? His very first film, ‘Duhai’(1943) as a lyricist featured two legendary singers-Shanta Apte, who was a rage in those days and Noor Jehan, who was to turn into malika-e-tarannum in later years. He tried his hand at direction too.īut ultimately writing lyrics for films became his first love. A BCom degree holder from Calcutta, he was one of the few educated persons who entered filmdom long, long ago-in early 1940ies of the last century. On July 5 was observed the death anniversary of eminent lyricist Bharat Vyas some of whose memorable lyrics like, ‘Ai malik tere bande hum’ have become an inspiration for the nation.
